No matter the circumstances, divorce causes a structural rift in family dynamics. It’s most commonly confusing, sad, and stressful not only for the parents who have chosen to separate, but also, if not especially, for their children, regardless of their age(s).
This course on co-parenting & divorce is designed to help you if you want to learn effective ways to restructure your family’s environment after divorce. We all deserve happy childhood memories in order to grow into happy, healthy adults, and this course will help you learn how to recreate safety, security, and comfort in your home. This course covers a wide range of topics, including how to break the news to your children, age-appropriate ways to explain the absence of a spouse, positive aspects of coparenting, and long term family adjustments. This course will also help you learn ways to take care of yourself during what is an undoubtedly difficult time in your life.
Co-parenting refers to a parenting relationship in which the parents are no longer involved in a romantic or intimate relationship with each other. One of the principles of co-parenting is that a child always has the right to maintain a relationship with both of his or her parents, regardless of the status of the parents’ relationship. The only exception to this principle would be if there is a court order or other legal order that restricts contact by one or both parents. Another principle of co-parenting is that both partners work together to maintain a healthy, safe, and supportive environment in which their children can not only grow, but thrive. It probably goes without saying that children who are raised by happy, healthy, emotionally-stable adults grow into happy, healthy, and emotionally-stable adults, themselves.
You’re probably familiar with the old saying, “it takes a village to raise a child.” There are so many different aspects of parenting and children are always changing as they grow, making this saying seem even more true. It’s nearly impossible for one person, one parent, to fulfill all of a child’s needs. It is necessary for both parents to be fully committed to ensuring that their child’s needs are their top priority, regardless of whatever may be going on between them.
Separation and subsequent divorce can be one of the most challenging and painful times in a person’s life. Whether you were married for 5 years or 25, divorce typically represents an upheaval of everything familiar as the relationship is dissolved. In addition to the emotional pain associated with divorce, parents have to manage the financial impact, housing, separating physical belongings, caring for their children, and coordination of parenting time and responsibilities. These new stressors can easily overwhelm parents who may already be under stress and weaken their ability to cope.
In order to ensure that, first and foremost, their child’s needs are met, parents must commit to clear, respectful communication and self-care. It is important for each parent to make every effort to cope with their emotions, such as anger, grief, anxiety, etc. in healthy ways. This not only allows the parents to focus on their child’s needs but also role models healthy coping skills.
This course will serve as a basic guide to navigate the often muddy waters of co-parenting. Anyone can benefit from this course, whether you are newly separated and your divorce is pending or you’ve been divorced for years. It is our hope that this course will help you learn how to effectively partner with your former spouse to create and maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship for all parties involved.
